Why Upgrading Your Water Mains Can Save You Thousands

Hidden Pipe Leaks in Older Homes in Gran Alacant

Many homes in Gran Alacant were built more than 20 years ago. While these properties remain structurally sound, one part of the house that often gets overlooked is the mains water pipe. In many cases, these pipes were installed using plastic or HDPE materials, which can become brittle over time and eventually crack or burst.

Unfortunately, when a pipe fails inside walls, floors, or underground, the problem often goes unnoticed until serious damage has already occurred.

Why Plastic Water Pipes Fail Over Time

Plastic and HDPE pipes were commonly used because they were inexpensive and easy to install. However, after decades of exposure to:

    • Temperature changes
    • Ground movement
    • Water pressure fluctuations
    • Natural aging of materials

they can weaken and develop hairline cracks or sudden fractures.

This piece was cut from a pipeline in a client’s basement. The pipe has been leaking for many years!

In coastal areas like Gran Alacant, additional factors such as soil conditions and mineral content in the water can accelerate this deterioration.

The Hidden Cost of a Burst Pipe

A broken mains pipe doesn’t just cause water damage to your home. One of the biggest surprises homeowners face is the water bill after the incident.

We regularly hear of bills ranging from €500 to €3500 after a leak that went unnoticed for days or weeks.

Many homeowners assume their home insurance will cover everything, but this is often not the case.

Typically, insurance companies will only cover:

    • The repair of the damaged pipe (especially if it’s plastic)
    • Basic repainting or cosmetic repairs

    What is often NOT covered:

    • The excess water consumption
    • Damage to furniture or belongings
    • Extensive restoration work

Unless you have extended comprehensive coverage, these costs usually fall on the homeowner.

    Case Study 1

The homeowner was overseas when a pipeline inside the basement bedroom wall ruptured. Unfortunately, the last person who left the property forgot to shut off the mains water supply before leaving.

As a result, the pipe leaked for several weeks until the water company eventually cut off the supply and left a note at the water meter indicating a possible leak. At this point, the water bill was about €1600.

By the time the homeowner was alerted by a neighbour, the basement bedroom had already suffered extensive damage. Severe black mould had developed, walls were heavily damaged, furniture was affected, and the entire property had a strong damp smell.

We were called in to locate the leak and carry out a temporary cut and repair of the damaged section so that the occupants could at least restore water supply to the property.

The insurance company took nearly three months to conduct their assessment, and even after six months the water damage had still not been repaired by their panel of contractors.

Unfortunately, the furniture and fixtures in the affected area were not covered under the homeowner’s insurance policy.

A Practical Solution: Upgrading to Copper Pipes

After repairing numerous broken mains pipes in the area, we often recommend upgrading the system to surface-mounted copper pipes.

    Copper offers several advantages:

    ✔ Much longer lifespan
✔ More resistant to pressure and temperature changes
    ✔ Leaks are visible immediately
✔ Easier to inspect and maintain
✔ Lower risk of hidden structural damage

By installing the pipes externally along the wall, any future issue becomes visible immediately—preventing weeks of unnoticed water loss.

    Case Study 2

Our client was living in the property when a rupture occurred in the mains water pipeline. The problem only came to light after the water company cut off the supply due to unusually high water usage. They left a note at the water meter indicating a possible leak. By the time the water was disconnected, the accumulated water bill had already exceeded €3,000.

Following the incident, the homeowner contacted a leak detection contractor. After inspecting the incoming pipework, they identified the source of the leak approximately two metres underground near the edge of the swimming pool. The detection service cost the homeowner around €200–€300, but no repairs were carried out at that time.

We were later called in to consult on a solution for repairing the pipeline. Instead of digging up the area around the pool, we recommended upgrading the system by installing surface-mounted pipework along the walls. This approach avoids future issues caused by ground movement or corrosion and makes the pipework fully visible, allowing any future leaks to be detected immediately.

The new pipework was installed starting from the water meter, running along the perimeter walls, branching off to supply the pool shower column, a garden tap, and finally connecting into the property’s main copper pipework in the underbuild.

Unfortunately, when the homeowner contacted their insurance company to claim the repair costs, the claim was rejected because the pipework was not covered under their policy. The water company also declined to reduce the bill, stating that any water usage after the meter is the homeowner’s responsibility.

A Small Upgrade That Prevents Big Problems

Upgrading your mains water pipe is often far cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of a hidden leak.

    It helps protect you from:

    • Unexpected high water bills
    • Property damage
    • Insurance disputes
    • Costly repairs

As an added benefit, we also include a custom 3D-printed water meter ID tag so technicians can easily identify your meter and avoid confusion in shared meter areas.
